California's Golden Core: Sacramento
At first, and from a distance, Sacramento's skyline seemed underwhelming . . . especially after moving here from Chicago which is widely known as the nation's architectural capital. But after digging into Sacramento's grid and exploring its blocks, buildings and neighborhoods, I discovered a vastly interesting city that is both beautifully understated and quietly spectacular.
The Golden State's capital city doesn't boast height, but its influence as the world's fourth largest economy is visibly etched into its architecture, energy, and character. Evidence of the State's early wine industry, and the wealth and glimmer of the Gold Rush, appear everywhere.
As the nation's farm-to-fork capital, and the political center of the West, Sacramento carries a certain Midwestern sensibility. Many of its people, places, and landmarks are casually refined and well informed. They are also easily accessible.
This project started with a few clicks of interesting buildings, and then the more I paid attention to my surroundings, the more I began seeing Sacramento through a different lens.
